Think Future, Act Now

The pressing issue of climate change requires immediate and decisive action. To remain on track to reach net-zero worldwide emissions by 2050 and pave the way for a sustainable future, we must invest $100 trillion over the next three decades in actionable projects that (1) directly reduce greenhouse gasses being released into the atmosphere and that (2) protect and restore ecosystems at an unprecedented scale. The Carbon Co can play a key role in closing the investment gap that stands in the way of achieving this important goal.

More than 70 countries - including the biggest polluters China, the United States, and the European Union – have set a 2050 net-zero target, covering about 76% of global emissions. However, these actions fall well short of what is needed to limit the rise in global temperatures to the world’s current target of 1.5°C / 2.7°F and to reach net-zero worldwide emissions by 2050. Annual investments in climate-friendly initiatives across the globe will need to more than triple by 2030 to ~$4 trillion for us to achieve these ambitious goals. Short-term thinking exhibited by political and economic leaders across the globe combined with a lack of political will to act on climate leaves a much-needed space for private investors to step in and fund new technologies that are our best bet to solve climate change.

Staying on track will require the massive deployment of all available clean energy technologies and a complete transformation of our existing energy systems in this decade. By 2030, annual additions of solar PV, wind and other renewables will need to increase at least four times, electrical vehicle (EV) sales will need to represent a 60% market share and the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency will need to triple.

We will also need to invest heavily in nature-based solutions - such as protecting coral reefs and mangrove forests, preserving grasslands and sustainably managing forests - in order to avoid an ecological disaster. Existing private levels of spending on nature conservation and restoration are persistently low due to lack of scale and relatively low risk-return profiles of nature-related investments. As a result, the current world-wide spend on nature-based solutions is less than a third of the 2030 requirement.

Investing heavily in the clean energy transition and nature-based solutions will help pave the way for a sustainable and thriving future. However, it is equally vital to ensure that this transition is fair and inclusive, leaving no community behind as we reshape the global economy. Climate investments must take into consideration those most impacted by climate change, whose well-being is most at risk of violation by inappropriate climate action. By investing wisely today, we can secure a sustainable, thriving future for generations to come, where humans and nature coexist in harmony.

At the Carbon Co, we harness the collective power of people to act on climate change. We invest much-needed capital in technology, nature, and people-centric solutions with measurable and tangible positive impact on climate visible already in the short-term. According to IEA, 82% of greenhouse gas emissions savings in the years leading to 2030 will come from already existing technologies and these are precisely the type of solutions that we fund. We work with experienced impact partners to carefully select the investment opportunities and actively track the performance of our investments in terms of greenhouse gasses reduced from the atmosphere, the amount of land restored, and lives positively impacted.

Access to funding is often the main barrier standing in the way of bringing these technologies to life and deployment. At the Carbon Co, we invest in technologies and solutions poised to show results within 2-3 years. Unlike most other private climate investors, we do not have a strictly set 5-10 year investment timeline or an expectation of double-digit returns, allowing us to invest in a much broader range of climate initiatives that in most cases might be overlooked by venture capital investors. Our investments will fill the much-needed gap that will help the planet get meaningfully closer to our ambitious 2050 net-zero goals.
